ICM Street Series Vol. 1

Good morning and welcome back to my blog. Last week, I shared my shooting experience with ICM a.k.a. Intentional Camera Movement, along with some street photos. I really got hooked up with this unique and creative technique. So, today I'm introducing a new photography series on ICM. Starting this October 2022, I will be showing the photos whenever I have a body of work. Initially, I wanted it to be a bi-monthly series. There are a couple of reasons. One reason is, as much as I like this shooting style I still like doing the usual street photography and posting new street photos on this blog site. Secondly, it will give me enough time (I hope) to juggle between normal street shooting and ICM. In this case, I will have to shoot as many ICM street photos as possible. Not going for quantities but more on the quality and aesthetics.

So I'll see how things go and adapt accordingly along the way whichever works out. OK without further ado, let's jump in to view the photos.

Random Street Phonographs

It's been a long time since I last took street photographs with a Smartphone. I used to enjoy taking pictures with my iPhone 6 Plus until it went dead in October 2021. The latest iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max with upgraded features has a super steep price tag. So, after using iOS for almost 6 years, I went back to an Android phone - the Realme C21 (RMX3201). The camera function is not as good as iPhone, of course, but good enough for normal photo-taking.

So, one afternoon I took a few impromptu photos at the nearby Community Club, and these are the two presentable ones to show here. The images are made with a downloaded camera app namely, Manual Camera: DSLR Camera Pro. All images are post-processed in Snapseed app. Yes, it is my all-time favorite mobile photo editing app.

Which photograph do you like best? Is the color one or monochrome? Let me know in the comment section below.

Personally, I like both (chuckles). However, the monochrome eliminates all color elements, giving more form and textures. I always see and previsualize in black and white despite shooting in color with an old DSLR like D70s. No Monochrome mode in this digital camera but this camera is so easy to work with. Not so many settings to fumble around.

The temple in the photo is Sri Krishnan Temple. It is a Hindu temple in Singapore. Built in 1870 and gazetted as a national monument of Singapore in 2014, it is one of Singapore's oldest temples and is the only South Indian temple in Singapore dedicated to Krishna and his consort Rukmini.

Street Photography with the NIKON Z fc

Greetings fellow readers and street photographers! It's been a long while since I last posted. A long hiatus it is I must admit. My sincere apologies for the long absence. The COVID-19 pandemic has truly affected me and my street photography. I took a whole lot lesser photos last year than the previous year. None for the first quarter this year. Last year, it was on and off in-between months, and recently I have tried to get back. Dang! It was way tougher than I expected. So much to re-adapt and focus on. Like I have to re-learn everything about street photography.

In today's blog, I'm not promoting the NIKON Z fc camera whatsoever, nor am I doing a camera review, which I don't do, and never will. I'm not affiliated with NIKON Singapore and I gain nothing out of it. Just sharing my street photos using the camera. So without much ado, let's jump right in.

Street Photo - Sleep Deprivation

Saw these 2 Indian ladies sleeping on the train when I boarded. Their dressing color compliment with the train company campaign sticker, stood out strongly. I sat right opposite them and snapped a few shots with my smartphone on Camera+ app. From their sloppy sitting position, it’s obvious these ladies were deprived from a good sleep the night before. Red color always symbolizes angst, energy, fiery and power. Somehow their sleepiness has this great contrast which is the reason I made this photo. Photo was post-processed in Snapseed for color correction and enhancement, with minor crop.

Street Photo - Chilled Sip In The Shade

It's been 3 months since my last blog post. It's 2021 and today is the third day of Chinese Lunar New Year. I stepped out of the house, walking on the streets with my Vivitar PN2011 point-and-shoot 35mm film camera. I got nothing in mind to shoot. Just walk and walk. Keeping a look out for interesting characters. I took several frames and yet to complete the roll.

I was walking around Chinatown and came to this spot where this sunlight hit upon this notice board and a red colored pillar. This scene reminded me of a photo I once made at this spot 9 years ago. Click here for the photo.

I thought it was a good lighting and hope to get some interesting street photos. Hence I stood nearby to get the composition with my iPhone 6 Plus on Camera+. Then I waited for a few minutes for the right subject to walk by into the sunlight area. A few people walked by and many shots were made. When I thought I was done and about to leave, this short gentleman came by and stood still right there at the edge of the shade. He took his time to enjoy his Coke. He took a few sips and held still in that position for a few moments, as if he was in deep thoughts. I took the chance to make a few shots.

In this photo presented above, I was trying to connect his can of Coca Cola to the red colored pillar, though they are obviously unrelated but somehow their cylindrical shapes are. Another color is present in this street scene i.e. the subject's green colored polo T-shirts against the signage and foliage in the far background.

One part of this street scene that I like is the subject's cast shadow, which was caused by the reflected sunlight on the notice board. The lighting effect was nice and it made the subject stood out instead of blending into the dark shade.

Affinity for 35mm Point-&-Shoot Cameras

 

In today's blog I want to share my thoughts about 35mm compact film cameras. A few months ago, with no particular reasons whatsoever, I have formed a strong affinity for 35mm compact point-&-shoot film cameras. It's not that I had never used point-&-shoot cameras before. In fact I do already owned two and they are Vivitar PN2011 and Horizon Perfekt panorama swing lens camera. On 30th July I bought a rather cheap 35mm compact film camera off Carousel for SGD$30. It's a Yashica Minitec AF. A point and shoot camera. Well, I got it away with the price because the built-in flashlight isn't working. I'm not doing any camera review on this blog. Anyway it's an enjoyable camera to shoot with on the streets.

Here I was at the same spot outside Mustafa Shopping Center, facing the road junction of Syed Alwi Road and Verdun Road. With the camera all preset, I kept on waiting for any interesting character to come by, and yes this African fellow walked right into the street scene. I had spotted him on the other side of the junction. He was on his cell phone as he crossed the road and halted right in front of me. I lifted my camera to my face, looking through the viewfinder. Then I saw an Indian man walking by heading to my left, also on his cell phone.

I anticipated as I got the composition right and was ready to press the shutter release button when all are in position. This is the fun part of street photography where we have to anticipate based on our close observation and knowledge of body language.

Here's another weekend shopping street panorama from my photo archive. I re-visited this location spot on numerous occasions and for the above street photo, I went back 4 years after a series of first attempts in 2009, as shown in the last blog post.

Like before, I waited at this particular spot for almost an hour, I think. An ideal spot for panorama photography where I had a clear wide view of the road junction and passing-by pedestrians. As I was waiting, I observed the street scene unfolding before me. Constantly on alert and trying to keep a lookout for interesting characters, or something out of the banal.

This is one of the many ways of doing street photography, which requires lots of patience and perseverance. My patience paid off when this Indian gentleman with a well-groomed white beard appeared. Yes, he looked into the camera as he walked by, merely out of curiosity about what I was doing.

Street Panorama – Weekend Shopping

Just another hustle and bustle day at the cross junction between Verdun Road and Syed Alwi Road in Little India precinct. I was standing outside Mustafa Shopping Center, watching people passing by. Many people came by to do their weekend shopping at Mustafa. Shoppers were seen hailing for taxi. Yes it's a common sight here on most weekends.

I was hoping to capture some interesting street photos with my swing lens panorama camera on Kodak Tri-X 400. This is one of the many shots I took on 13th December 2009, Sunday. A few more to come. Do come back here or subscribe for new updates.

Street Panorama – THIS FASHION

Here's another street panorama photograph from my photo archive. Not too sure if local Singapore ladies do remember this retail store. This Fashion was once the largest fashion retailer in Singapore with more than 60 outlets and over 350 employees. They’ve made a pretty huge impact on our Singapore women lives before H&M and Uniqlo. Unfortunately its abrupt disappearance almost overnight back in 2011 has stumped many Singaporeans.

Notice the two old trishaw riders? It was a common sight eleven years ago to see them resting at this spot. This spot is located at 108 Middle Road, Bernhard Schulte House, right next to Bugis+ building. Currently, this retail space is operated by a cafe, Mellower Coffee.

Trishaws today have become part of Singapore’s cultural heritage. As trishaws are no longer a common means of travel for locals, the passengers that trishaw riders now ferry are predominantly tourists who employ their services as a means of experiencing the Singapore of yesteryear. As such, most trishaws are now found operating in tourist areas such as Chinatown and Bugis.

Unlike those licensed trishaw riders, these two old riders are sole proprietors who operate their own trishaws at their own time.  It was tough for them to make a living Fast forward to present days, it's scarce to see them around as they might have retired. Currently, it is mandatory for all trishaw riders to operate with a licence.
